What is "Mystery Shopping"?

Mystery Shopping is an objective view of a business through the eyes of a customer. A Mystery Shopper visits a business anonymously, posing as a regular customer, to experience and evaluate the level of customer service provided by the business. Mystery shopping provides management with a detailed assessment of employee performance and the variables that affect a customer's experience and satisfaction with the business.

How much money will I make as a mystery shopper?
For most shoppers, mystery shopping is a hobby or part-time venture. Obviously the more shops you receive, the more you can potentially earn. Shoppers located in a large metropolitan area will have more opportunities than those located in a rural town. We suggest if you are sincerely interested in mystery shopping that you apply as a shopper with as many different companies as possible. One terrific source of reputable companies is the Mystery Shopping Providers Association or MSPA. You can visit their website at http://www.mysteryshop.org.shops/ pay fees ranging from $5 up depending on what is required of the shopper. In many cases, no fees are paid but instead you are reimbursed for a product, service, meal, etc. Some shops pay both a fee and reimbursement.

Who is Market Force Information? Market Force Information is the leading customer experience information and insights partner for multi-location businesses. Through our network of independent contractors, we provide our clients with insight into the experience their customers encounter. This information helps clients implement strategies and training programs to improve their customer experience.

What is mystery shopping? A type of market research, it is a standard and common business practice where service evaluations are made without the store’s personnel being aware that they are being “shopped”. Mystery shopping provides information about client-established customer service standards. This information then allows companies to adjust training and award bonuses that help turn their service vision into reality. Good customer service benefits us all.



What does a mystery shopper do? Anonymous “shoppers” pose as ordinary customers and evaluate the business based on service, cleanliness, food quality and other factors that the client may require. As a part-time Independent Contractor (not an employee), you would receive complete guidelines for each shop that you choose to accept. Average shop time is between 1 and 2 hours.



What kind of “shops” might I do? We shop a variety of retail shops including gasoline stations, fast food establishments, sit-down restaurants, drug stores, computer stores, warehouse clubs, wireless telephone providers, bookstores, etc.



What do I get paid? For many shops you will be paid a fee to compensate you for completing our service questionnaire and for other shops you make a reimbursable purchase of a meal. Shoppers are paid once a month either by check or direct deposit, for all approved shops completed in the prior calendar month. Fees are paid only for reports acceptable to our clients.



What are the requirements for being a mystery shopper? You must be at least 20 years old and have a minimum of a high school education. You need excellent observational skills and must be very detail oriented. Most shops require a digital watch that displays seconds or a stopwatch for timing the store’s service. Access to a computer is required and high-speed access is highly recommended. A digital camera is necessary for higher paying audit-type assignments.



Does Market Force Information need/use more than one shopper in my area? Yes, we do. To maintain the confidentiality of our mystery shoppers, we must rotate shoppers on a regular and routine basis.
