Walgreens Trip and Coupon Tips!!
So if you have ever used coupons before, you will know there are not the nicest cashiers some times. This week at Walgreens the plug-in fragrances are 50% making some of them $3.99. I had a 4 dollar coupon so I would get them for FREE. Well I picked up two and brought the cashiers my coupons as well and the floss that has RR this week. The first $4 coupon went through fine, but the second one beeped. AHHH...the dreaded beep. The cashier looked new and nervous so I explained all she needed to do was downgrade the coupon 2 cents because of the overage. She said she was not allowed to do that. I explained(nicely) that they have done it before and I use coupons a lot. She said that she would get the manager. I said okay(thinking the manager will know the policy). Well...the manager did not seem to agree with me and said she could not downgrade the coupon. I was confused because Walgreens has done this before multiple times. I explained that to her and she said the other Walgreens was wrong. At this point I was so confused and started to get embarassed so I just told her to take the item OFF.She did and I apologized and that was that. Well I sat in my car thinking, I am pretty sure I am right and that manager needs to know the coupon policy correctly. So called corporate and nicely asked about the situtation. I explained if I was wrong that is fine, but if not I would like to know. She said she would get back to me. The next day the STORE manager called me from that store and said "I am so sorry, you were right, and she should of downgraded the coupon." She then told me she explained the coupon policy to her and there should not be anymore problems. I tell this story to let everyone know that every couponer, including me, has issues. Some tips to help prevent this:
1) Always look for a young cashier that looks like they are in a good mood( I know this sounds weird, but it works)
2) Know that coupons are just like cash. The store will get the money.
3) Always be polite. If they get a manager, don't worry. This happens all the time. Mostly they are on your side. However, if you thought you were right and they said you were not, call corporate and nicely explain the situation.
4) Have corporate numbers plugged into your phones. I will say, the only corporate number I have ever called was Walgreens and that was to explain(I was upset about this one) that a cashier said I was committing coupon fraud and the other was this situtation above. Both times, I was the one that was RIGHT. I do not call to get people in trouble. I just want them to be educated, so I can keep shopping there. Coupons are like cash, so they are getting a lot of money from me. :)
5) Remember that most people don't understand coupons. We can educate them.
6) Most stores have their own coupons that you can use with manu. coupons.
7) Don't give up. When I first started I was so frustrated and it felt like I was spending more money. Once you get it down you will be so happy you did. I would say it took me about 3 months to understand everything. I still forget to use coupons, or have incidences above. That is okay. :)
